"To know yourself
Is to love yourself..."
Respect by B.F Mitchell | a very quick read; a compilation of poems that the author wrote as reflections on his life.
This book was written by my dad so it holds a special place in my heart. He has endured a lot throughout his life because of the decision he made and crowd he kept. Most of his poems are extremely personal and reflect on those experiences. They speak of fear, struggle, strife, inequality, love, comfort, dreams, and strength.
My favorite poem was "Love". Here is a quick excerpt:
i love the darkness because it shows me the stars
so too will i applaud my enemies and make them my allies
i will build bridges instead of walls
with divine love
will crush their evil intent
i love the light because it shows me what lurks in the dark
so too will i shine my love into the darkest of hearts
until kindness becomes them
This really touched home for me. Not because my father wrote it but because I, just like so many others, have been through so much in life. I have been talked about, lied on, judged without knowledge of my character, amongst so many other horrendous deeds. When I want to not trust again or want to think there is so limited good in this world there is a part of me that overcomes all of that. It urges me to fuel positivity into the lives of those that I cross paths with from day to day. It almost tells me that I cannot become tough and dark but that I must welcome the light and allow it to continue to shine through me and onto others. Love is so important in this world and maybe if we had so much more of it we would see greater results.
This book is a great read. You can read it in one sitting. There are lessons to be learned in each poem and they are timeless so I find myself picking up the book over and over again; re-reading poems as my life calls for their guidance and reminders of balance.
You can purchase this book on amazon.com by simply clicking the image above or the title. This book is extremely affordable at just $2.95 for the Kindle ebook or $5.50 for the paperback.
